Women's health is a specialist role within the musculoskeletal field of Physiotherapy.

Women's health physiotherapy encompasses all women through all stages of life from adolescents to post-menopausal.  Not just those who are pre-or-post natal. Interestingly most women will experience some sort of women's health issue at some point in their life.  However most women suffer in silence, thinking this is a normal issue and just part of being a woman. They are too embarrassed to talk to their GP about it or just don't know where to go to get help.

Women's health issues include stress and urge incontinence, pelvic girdle pain, pelvic organ prolapse, abdominal separation and sexual dysfunction. None of these issues are normal.  There is an effective non-invasive approach to treating these conditions.

1/3 women will experience incontinence issues during their life.  Physiotherapy has been shown to have 84% improvement in urinary incontinence and there is level 1 evidence to support this (this means the research is good and it works).

Women's health Physiotherapists will assess, treat, educate and manage any pelvic or pelvic floor dysfunction.  There is no need to suffer in silence!

During your consultation your therapist will take a detailed history and examination.  The examination may include an internal examination of your pelvic floor if you are comfortable with that.  A clear explanation of findings will be given.   They will formulate an individualised treatment plan together with yourself to help guide you through you journey.

Treatment may include education regarding issues, joint and soft tissue work, scar massage, pelvic floor exercises/rehabilitation, musculoskeletal exercise rehabilitation, use of biofeedback or electrical stimulation.
