Movement really is medicine
Our Exercise Physiologists will help you get moving…it’s never too late to start
Want to feel stronger, move confidently, lose weight or manage a health condition or injury? Exercise Physiology involves exercising your body as a form of treatment. The evidence is clear…movement really is medicine! Ditch the gym fees, get experienced care and take the first step towards movement that allows you to live your life to the fullest.
Our Exercise Physiologists Kristy Kneen, Imogen Ryan and Elle Bonser have years of experience assisting clients to feel healthier and move better. They will work with you to identify and overcome any barriers to achieving your movement and health goals.
“I am in my late 60s and have been attending Embody for several years for building strength and maintaining balance. I believe I need to train for my later years to enable me to live my life as fully as I'd like to. I really appreciate that the Exercise Physiologists help me achieve my goals through tailored programs to suit my body and strength and that I can rely on them to observe and comment on my technique, keeping me safe from injury. As an added benefit, they are all lovely people with a good sense of humour.”

Exercise Physiology FAQs
-
If your doctor has referred you to Embody Movement to see an Exercise Physiologist, you will likely have an initial consultation where the EP takes a comprehensive look at your medical history, lifestyle and current fitness levels. The EP works with you to set some goals and will run you through a series of functional tests, strength tests, range of motion, balance and questionnaires. Based on your assessment the EP will design and “prescribe” exercises specifically for your needs and then support you through the journey.

During your initial consultation your Exercise Physiologist will be able to help guide you on what the next best steps are for you based on your assessment and goals. They may recommend joining a group strength or Pilates class, continue working one on one or develop a home exercise plan.

It is vitally important to prevent and treat bone loss in patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia. Exercise can effectively increase bone density and reduce the progression of bone loss. Disuse and inactivity can cause bone loss, whereas weight-bearing exercises may maintain or improve bone mineral density. There is a significant correlation between muscle strength and bone mineral density. There is evidence that strengthening exercises may lead to an increase in the mineral density of the bones to which the muscles are attached (Mehrsheed Sinaki 1989).

Come and talk to us! We are here to help. Our Exercise Physiologist will find out more about what’s happening with you and then work with you on a plan to improve your balance. They may suggest joining our Balance and Bones Class for older individuals who have balance concerns. Other options could include working one on one with the EP or engaging in a home exercise plan that will allow you to safely exercise independently.

Yes! One-on-one sessions may be right for you if you prefer individualised attention and privacy during your workouts. In one-on-one sessions, the EP can tailor every aspect of the exercise plan specifically to your needs, pace and preferences.
This can be especially beneficial for conditions like osteoporosis, where certain exercises need to be done with careful attention to technique and safety. Letting your EP know that you prefer one-on-one sessions will ensure that you feel comfortable and supported throughout your program.
Keep in mind that classes at Embody are very different to gym classes. Our group exercise classes are welcoming, friendly and relaxed. There are no expectations and everyone is supported to work at their own pace.

Our Exercise Physiologists can provide customised movement programs for oncology and cancer patients. Engaging in supervised exercise can offer benefits like reduced fatigue, improved muscle and bone strength and enhanced mental health.
Exercise can help to counteract the side effects of cancer treatment, such as muscle weakness, bone density loss and mobility restrictions, while boosting immune function and overall quality of life. One-on-one sessions with an EP ensure that exercise intensity is carefully monitored and adjusted to meet your unique needs and comfort level throughout treatment and recovery.
