Shockwave and Laser Therapy: Supporting Healing and Pain Relief

At Embody Movement, we are always looking for ways to support our clients with effective, evidence-based treatment options. We are pleased to now offer Shockwave and Laser Therapy, delivered by our physiotherapist Paulo, as part of our comprehensive approach to managing pain and supporting recovery.

These therapies provide a modern, non-invasive way to stimulate healing, reduce pain, and help people return to the activities that matter most to them.

What is Shockwave and Laser Therapy?

Shockwave and Laser Therapy are advanced treatments used to support healing in muscles, tendons, and joints. They are commonly used in physiotherapy to help manage persistent pain and promote tissue repair.

Shockwave Therapy uses targeted sound waves delivered through the skin to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. These waves help increase blood flow, break down damaged tissue, and encourage tissue repair.

Laser Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate tissue, helping to reduce inflammation, support cell repair, and promote healing at a deeper level.

When combined, these therapies can work together to:

  • Stimulate healing in injured tissues

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Improve circulation

  • Support recovery from persistent pain or injury

  • Enhance the effectiveness of rehabilitation

These treatments are safe, evidence-based, and are typically used alongside exercise therapy and hands-on physiotherapy care.

Benefits of Shockwave and Laser Therapy

Shockwave and Laser Therapy may provide a range of benefits for people experiencing musculoskeletal pain or slow healing.

These therapies may help to:

  • Reduce pain and sensitivity in injured tissues

  • Stimulate the body’s natural healing processes

  • Improve blood flow to the affected area

  • Break down scar tissue or calcification

  • Improve movement and function

  • Support recovery when symptoms have not responded to other treatments

They are often recommended when pain has been present for some time or when healing has slowed, helping to “re-activate” the body’s repair processes.

The Role of Shockwave and Laser Therapy in Pain Relief

Persistent pain can be frustrating and may limit your ability to move comfortably or participate in everyday activities. Shockwave and Laser Therapy can play an important role in managing this type of pain.

These therapies work by:

  • Stimulating healing in damaged or irritated tissue

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Increasing circulation and oxygen delivery

  • Helping to decrease pain signals from the affected area

Importantly, Shockwave and Laser Therapy are not stand-alone treatments. They are most effective when used as part of a broader physiotherapy plan that may include exercise, education, and hands-on treatment. This approach supports both short-term relief and long-term recovery.

Conditions That May Benefit from Shockwave and Laser Therapy

Shockwave and Laser Therapy are commonly used to help manage a range of tendon and soft tissue conditions.

These may include:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

  • Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries

  • Calcific tendinopathy

  • Hip pain (gluteal tendinopathy or bursitis)

  • Knee pain (patellar tendinopathy)

  • Heel pain

  • Muscle strains

  • Chronic tendon or soft tissue injuries

  • Persistent pain that has not improved with other treatments

If you are unsure whether this therapy is appropriate for your condition, our team can help guide you.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your physiotherapist will begin with a thorough assessment to understand your symptoms, medical history, and goals. This ensures the treatment is appropriate and tailored to your needs.

The therapy itself is delivered through a handheld device placed on the skin over the affected area. You may feel a tapping or pulsing sensation during Shockwave Therapy, or gentle warmth with Laser Therapy.

Sessions are typically short, and most people are able to return to their normal daily activities afterwards. Your physiotherapist will also provide guidance on exercises or strategies to support your recovery between sessions.

Is Shockwave and Laser Therapy Right for You?

These therapies are suitable for many people, however they may not be appropriate in certain situations. Your physiotherapist will always assess your individual circumstances and medical history before recommending treatment.
